The Cowboy’s Life
There are three reasons why the cowboys are chasing the cattle in the picture. The first reason is there is no grass in the pastures, and the water is getting too low. The second reasons is that the calves will need weaned soon. The third reason is so they can sell the calves for money. That is why the farmers chase the cattle home every year.It is autumn, so the grass is starting to die. The grass has mostly lost its color and it is brown now. That is why the farmers have to bring the cattle home. Then the farmers can give them hay and water because the grass is low in the pasture. The farmer’s cattle will do better getting hay in the yard. The farmer gives them hay and grain so the calves will gain more weight. When the farmer sells them, he will get more money. The calves need weaning in the fall because the cows have to get ready for their next calf. The calves that got weaned will do better on feed than on the cow. They will get bigger if you put them on feed for a month. In the fall, weaned calves weigh about five to six hundred pounds. If the price is a dollar a pound, you will get six hundred dollars.When the farmers sell the calves they will get money. They can pay their bills and they might have to buy bulls or more cows. With that money they might buy some heifers for the next year. The farmer will have to buy some hay seed for the next year. He needs more seed because if the farmer buys more cows and heifers they will need something to eat.
